See the learning behind the behaviour.
Te Whāriki Learning Progressions is a practical 34-page professional resource designed to help early childhood kaiako recognise and articulate how children’s capabilities may emerge, grow and strengthen over time across all 20 learning outcomes of Te Whāriki.
Rather than treating progression as a checklist or age-based sequence, this guide supports thoughtful professional noticing. It helps kaiako look beyond the activity a child is doing and consider what is changing in the child’s knowledge, skills, dispositions, working theories and participation over time.
Inside the resource:
Emerging, Growing and Strengthening examples for all 20 Te Whāriki learning outcomes
Practical “what kaiako might notice” indicators
Te ao Māori perspectives woven throughout
Seven disposition lenses for recognising learning across contexts
Brief research roots and selected professional foundations
Guidance for using the progressions in assessment, planning, reflection, mentoring and internal evaluation
This resource is designed to support professional judgement, team dialogue and responsive curriculum decision-making. Children’s learning remains non-linear, relational and context dependent.
Format: Digital PDF download.
This is an independent HeartLead NZ professional resource. It is not an official Ministry of Education resource, an assessment or diagnostic tool, or a framework for determining whether a child is “on track”.
