Designing an Intentional & Responsive Curriculum
Create a curriculum that genuinely reflects your philosophy, community and aspirations for children by bringing together local curriculum, assessment, planning, intentional teaching and evaluation into one meaningful approach.
Why This Matters
At the heart of Te Whāriki is an invitation for every early learning service to interpret the curriculum in ways that are meaningful to the children, whānau and communities they serve. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, each service has the opportunity to create a curriculum that reflects the unique people, places and aspirations that make their setting special.
Designing an intentional and responsive curriculum means looking beyond individual planning documents or assessment templates. It involves bringing together your local curriculum, whānau aspirations, intentional teaching, assessment and the Ministry of Education's guiding resources—including Te Whāriki, Kōwhiti Whakapae, He Māpuna te Tamaiti and other curriculum frameworks—so they work together to support children's learning and wellbeing.
When these elements are aligned, curriculum becomes more than a collection of systems and processes. It becomes a shared way of thinking that gives teachers clarity and confidence, strengthens relationships with children and whānau, and ensures every intentional decision is guided by a clear understanding of what matters most in your setting.
