Throughout Te Whāriki, children are described as "over time and with guidance and encouragement, becoming increasingly capable of..." Those words remind us that learning is not static or accidental. They highlight the important role we play as educators in noticing children's growing capabilities and intentionally responding in ways that support learning to deepen over time.

Assessment has the potential to be so much more than a collection of individual stories or snapshots of learning. When we step back and look across our documentation, we begin to see patterns of growth, developing competencies and the progression of children's knowledge, skills and dispositions. Rather than creating more documentation, we can use the documentation we already have more intentionally to build a richer picture of each child's learning journey.
